The PGA Tour heads to Japan this week for the Baycurrent Classic, which runs Thursday through Sunday at Yokohama Country Club, where Xander Schauffele is back to defend his title, PGA Tour.com reported.

The event has a 72-player field and no cut. It pays $1.44 million to the winner from an $8 million purse, plus 500 FedExCup points, according to the tour and Golfshake. The field is made up of the top 60 available players in the FedExCup standings, eight players from the Japan Golf Tour and four sponsor picks, Golfshake said.

Schauffele won last year at 19 under par, one shot ahead of Max Greyserman, after opening with an even-par round and then shooting 63, 67 and 64. That same week, Matt McCarty set the tournament record with an 11-under 60.

The field includes 15 of the top 50 players in the world, led by world No. 5 Wyndham Clark, who has three wins this year, the tour said. Thirteen players from this year's Presidents Cup at Medinah are also playing.

Home favorite Hideki Matsuyama, a past winner of this event, has made the cut in all 23 of his starts this season, Golfshake said. Jordan Spieth has more on the line, since he sits 52nd in the FedExCup standings and needs to move into the top 50 to reach next year's biggest events. He has not posted a top-10 finish this season.

The course is a par 71 that plays 7,322 yards and uses 16 holes from the West Course and two from the East Course, and it was remodeled by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. Past winners include Tiger Woods, who won the first edition in 2019. Highs should reach the upper 60s to low 70s, with winds of 10 to 20 mph on Friday and Saturday.

This is the third of eight FedExCup Fall events, where players fight for top-100 status and their tour cards for 2027. Golf Channel will air the rounds from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. ET, starting Wednesday night, with streaming on PGA Tour.com and the PGA Tour app.

What we know: Schauffele defends, and the event pays the winner $1.44 million.
What we don't: Whether Spieth can climb into the top 50.
