Russian strikes kill 28 across Ukraine, including 20 in Pryluky apartment block
Russian attacks across Ukraine killed 28 people Wednesday, Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivsky said, as the toll at a Pryluky apartment block rose to 20, including five children. Two more people died in evening shelling of Kyiv. The overnight attack came on Putin's 74th birthday.
Russia launched a large missile and drone attack on Ukraine overnight into Wednesday. It came on Russian President Vladimir Putin's 74th birthday.
Ukraine's air force said Russia used ballistic, cruise and anti-ship missiles, plus 130 attack drones. It said it shot down or stopped 161 targets. Those included five ballistic missiles, 39 cruise missiles and 117 drones, the Kyiv Post reported. Even so, missiles and drones struck 18 locations.
In Kyiv, explosions were first heard around 3:15 a.m. local time, the Kyiv Independent reported. A second wave came about two hours later. Two people died in the Darnytskyi district when a strike set a garage complex on fire, Meduza reported. Russia hit Kyiv again Wednesday evening, and two more people were killed, Vyhivsky and Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
The worst damage came in Pryluky, in the Chernihiv region. A cruise missile hit a five-story apartment building while people slept, and one section collapsed. By Wednesday night, 20 people were dead there, including five children, Vyhivsky said, Ukrinform and AFP reported. Another 55 were hurt, seven of them children. Zelensky said three of the children killed were just 1 year old. Police and rescuers saved 29 people across the country, most of them in Pryluky, Vyhivsky said. The search of the rubble went on for more than 14 hours.
In Kremenchuk, two people were killed and 34 were hurt, regional head Vitalii Diakivnych said, Ukrainska Pravda reported. Two people were also killed in Oleksandriia, the BBC reported. Strikes also hit sites in Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia.
Russia's defense ministry called it a "massive strike" on military factories, Reuters reported. It said targets included sites where a company called Fire Point builds Flamingo cruise missiles and long-range drones. It also said it hit port and ship-repair sites in the Odesa region.
The toll climbed all day. Early counts put the dead at six, then nine. Pryluky's count rose from 13 in the early afternoon to 20 by night. In his evening address, Zelensky said 25 people were killed and 100 were wounded, Ukrinform reported. Vyhivsky later put the day's toll at 28. Zelensky called it one of Russia's "most vile" attacks and said the Pryluky building was destroyed as a "birthday gift" to Putin, the BBC reported.
The attack follows days of heavy fire, including strikes on Kyiv the night before, the Kyiv Independent reported. Zelensky had warned this week that a big attack was coming and urged people to take air raid alerts seriously. Pryluky declared three days of mourning, through Friday.
What we know: Russian attacks killed at least 28 people across Ukraine on Wednesday, 20 of them in Pryluky.
What we don't: Whether anyone is still trapped under the Pryluky rubble.
Where outlets agree Ukrinform and AFP, via Arab News, both report that Russian attacks killed 28 people across Ukraine on Wednesday, including 20 in Pryluky.
Where they differ Zelensky's evening address put the day's toll at 25, below the Interior Ministry's 28, and Russia says it hit only military and industrial sites.
