Flowers Foods is pulling some Nature's Own Hawaiian Bread because the packages don't list milk as an ingredient. People with a milk allergy or severe sensitivity could have an allergic reaction if they eat it, the company said in a notice posted by the Food and Drug Administration.

The bread was sold in stores in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. The recall covers 20-ounce loaves with the UPC code 0 72250 91662 2 and "Best if used by" dates from Oct. 8 to Oct. 18, 2026. Their product codes start with 0188 262, 265, 267, 270 or 272, followed by a time range. The full list is in the FDA notice. The recall also covers 40-ounce two-packs with the UPC code 0 72250 00683 5, which have no product code.

The company found the problem during a review of production records. No illnesses or other problems had been reported, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. Flowers announced the recall Oct. 2, and the FDA posted it Oct. 5.

What to do: Throw the bread away or return it to the store for a full refund. Questions can go to Flowers' Consumer Relations Center at 1-866-245-8921, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern.

Milk is a common problem in recalls like this one. Of the major food allergens, milk is the most common cause of recalls for unlisted allergens, the FDA says. Bakery products are the food type most often involved. Federal law requires labels to name major allergens such as milk, eggs, wheat, soy, peanuts and sesame. Allergic reactions can range from hives and lip swelling to anaphylaxis, a life-threatening reaction. The FDA says anyone with symptoms should stop eating the food and get medical care.

Flowers Foods is based in Thomasville, Georgia. It is one of the largest makers of packaged bread in the U.S. Its brands include Dave's Killer Bread, Wonder and Tastykake.

What we know: The recall covers specific Hawaiian Bread loaves and two-packs sold in five states.
What we don't: How many packages were affected; the company has not said.
