An old superhero movie is setting new records. Disney says the "Avengers: Endgame" Encore re-release has earned about $126 million worldwide, lifting the 2019 film's lifetime total to about $2.926 billion. Deadline reported that the total moves "Endgame" past "Avatar" on the global chart.

The re-release brought fans back to theaters for one more look at the battle against Thanos, which wrapped up more than a decade of Marvel films. Re-releases are cheap for studios, since the movie is already made, and they can fill theaters during slow weeks.

At the weekend box office, Anne Hathaway's "Verity" opened at No. 1 with about $32.6 million. "Resident Evil," directed by Zach Cregger, took in about $12.5 million in its second weekend after a strong $60.15 million debut, Deadline and Box Office Mojo reported. "Heart of the Beast" earned about $11 million. Tom Cruise's "Digger" opened to just $8 million.

Cregger has become a hot name in horror after his 2022 film "Barbarian" and the 2025 hit "Weapons." Studios are betting on horror because it is relatively cheap to make and draws young audiences.

Here is the background. "Avatar," James Cameron's 2009 film, has long competed with "Endgame" for the title of highest-grossing film ever. "Avatar" retook the lead in 2021 after a re-release in China. With the Encore run, "Endgame" now has the edge again, according to Disney's figures.

Theaters still face a tough market. Total box office has not fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels, and studios send many films to streaming within weeks.

Fans can find showtimes for the Encore release on theater chain websites.
