Brewers edge Padres 3-2 after roof-ball out
Milwaukee beat San Diego 3-2 in NLDS Game 1 on Saturday after William Contreras' go-ahead homer and a bizarre ninth-inning roof play. Ty France's drive hit American Family Field's roof and landed in Jackson Chourio's glove for an out. Game 2 is Sunday at 4 p.m. ET on FS1.
The Milwaukee Brewers took a 1-0 lead in the National League Division Series with a 3-2 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night at American Family Field. William Contreras snapped a 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the seventh, and Trevor Megill closed it after one of the strangest outs of the postseason.
In the ninth, with a runner on first and one out, Padres first baseman Ty France crushed a towering fly that struck a roof railing in fair territory. Under stadium ground rules, that ball remains in play. Chourio caught it on the warning track for an out. San Diego challenged for foul territory and lost the review. Jackson Merrill then lined out to end the game.
Chourio had already tied the game in the third with a two-run homer — his franchise-record fifth career postseason shot at age 22. San Diego had chased ace Jacob Misiorowski after four innings and led 2-0 early on consecutive singles and a broken-bat grounder. The Padres later loaded the bases in the seventh and put runners on the corners in the eighth without scoring.
Backstory: Milwaukee won a franchise-record 103 games and opened at home after a bye. San Diego arrived via a Wild Card sweep of the Cubs and had lost just four of its prior 24 games. Contreras had been 1-for-20 against the Padres this season before the go-ahead blast.
Where to watch: NLDS Game 2 is Sunday at 4 p.m. ET on FS1, with Michael King lined up for San Diego and Logan Henderson for Milwaukee.
What we know:
Final is Brewers 3, Padres 2. Milwaukee leads the best-of-five 1-0. Contreras and Chourio homered; the France roof catch stood as an out.
What we don't:
How either club sequences its bullpen if Game 2 turns early, and whether the roof play becomes a lasting series talking point beyond Saturday.
The score is final and multi-outlet confirmed. Sunday's 4 p.m. ET FS1 rematch is the next chance for San Diego to even the series in Milwaukee.
Where outlets agree AP, MLB.com, and CBS Sports agree the Brewers beat the Padres 3-2 and lead the NLDS 1-0 after Contreras' homer and the France roof out.
Where they differ Padres manager Craig Stammen called the roof rule a bad break that looked like a possible home run while Milwaukee treated the catch as a clean ground-rule out.
