De Miguel was hurt after colliding with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono in the closing seconds of the Segunda División game, CNN reports. He had been chasing the ball near the halfway line when Owono, who had come far out of his goal, crashed into him at speed, CNN says.

Owono was shown a red card and sent off, CNN reports. The match was abandoned as de Miguel received medical help, CNN says.

De Miguel was taken to a hospital and admitted to intensive care, the Post reports. The Post says he suffered a cardiac arrest. Overnight, the club said his condition had worsened, and on Tuesday morning it announced he had died, CNN reports.

“There are no words of comfort,” the club said in a statement, CNN reports. The family asked for privacy, the Post says.

Spanish police opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter, the Post reports. Judicial officials in the Canary Islands said the inquiry is routine, because any death that is not natural sets off an investigation under Spanish law, the Post says, citing Reuters.

Players on each side looked devastated after the collision, CNN reports. Owono had been walking off the field but ran back to de Miguel after seeing how badly he was hurt, CNN says.

De Miguel first went down holding his chest, then lay still on the field, CNN reports. The collision came in the seventh minute of stoppage time, the Post says.

Andorra also paid tribute to de Miguel on Tuesday, CNN reports. Tenerife president Felipe Miñambres said the club would go through the mourning together, CNN says.
