Meta raises $15 billion in five-part bond sale to fund AI
Meta raised $15 billion on Tuesday through a five-part US dollar bond sale to help pay for AI, Reuters and Chosunbiz report. Meta is paying higher yields than it did in April, TNW and Chosunbiz report. A first euro bond could bring the total above $20 billion.
Meta Platforms said on Tuesday it is raising $15 billion through a five-part US dollar bond offering, Reuters reports. Chosunbiz, citing Bloomberg News, also reports that Meta raised $15 billion.
The money will help pay for growing spending on AI, including data centers, Reuters reports. Meta has said it expects to spend $135 billion to $145 billion this year, it says.
The sale includes $3.25 billion of notes due in 2031 with a 5.85% coupon and $3.25 billion due in 2033 at 6.25%, according to a regulatory filing, Reuters reports.
Meta is paying more to draw buyers than it did in April, TNW and Chosunbiz report. Chosunbiz says the 30-year bond was set at 2.2 percentage points above US government debt. That is about 0.9 points more than the April deal, it says.
Meta is also expected to sell its first euro bond, which could come as soon as Wednesday, TNW and Chosunbiz report. The dollar and euro deals together are expected to top $20 billion, they say.
Meta raised $25 billion in an April bond sale and $30 billion last year, Reuters reports. Its total debt stood at $83.67 billion as of September 30, according to data compiled by LSEG, it says.
The sale follows a move by S&P Global Ratings last week to cut its outlook on Meta's credit rating to negative over its AI spending, TNW and Chosunbiz report. Moody's gave the new debt an Aa3 rating, Reuters reports.
Meta is also raising money through stock. Last week it priced $25 billion of common stock and $12.5 billion of preferred shares, TNW reports.
Big Tech has sold almost $430 billion of high-grade bonds since last year, TNW reports. Their bonds trade at the widest gap over other high-grade debt since 2003, it says.
What we know: Meta has sold $15 billion of US dollar bonds in five parts, at higher yields than in April.
What we don't: How large the euro sale will be, and when Meta will tap debt markets again.
Where outlets agree Reuters and Chosunbiz report that Meta raised $15 billion from a US dollar bond sale on Tuesday.
Where they differ TNW, citing Bloomberg, says the 30-year bonds were discussed at about 2.5 percentage points above US government debt, while Chosunbiz says they were set at 2.2 points.
