Two helicopters collide near Everest base camp, killing an Indian tourist
Two helicopters collided while trying to land at Pheriche, just below Mount Everest base camp, on Tuesday, killing a tourist from India, CBS News, ABC News and Fox News report. A passenger from New Zealand was badly hurt. Nepal's aviation authority has opened an investigation.
The man who died was Vasanth Kumar Balaramudu, 47, of Chennai, India, ABC News reports, citing the Nepal Police. Fox News reports the same name and age, citing the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal.
The helicopters crashed at a helipad in Pheriche, about 4,200 meters up in the Solukhumbu district, ABC reports.
One helicopter was a cargo craft run by Air Dynasty, flying from Lukla with only its pilot aboard, police said, according to ABC. The other, run by Fishtail Air, was returning from Everest base camp with a pilot and two foreign passengers.
The other passenger, Shailesh Patel of New Zealand, was seriously injured and flown to a hospital in Kathmandu, ABC reports.
Fishtail Air said its helicopter crashed while carrying passengers rescued from the Everest region, Fox reports, citing Reuters.
The crash was caught on a livestream weather camera run by Webcam Nepal, ABC says.
There are no roads on Everest, and helicopters are the only way to bring down trekkers and guides who become sick or worn out, CBS reports. Heavy snow had covered the route before the weather improved on Sunday, letting thousands of trekkers move again.
It was the second incident on the route to base camp in a week, CBS says. A fire broke out at a hotel in Dingboche, a stop for trekkers, last Friday, with no injuries reported.
