Scott is already tipped as a favorite for the best actor Oscar, The Guardian says. He would be the first out gay actor to win it.

Clio Barnard's Birmingham-set drama I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning is second with eight nominations, the paper reports. Animol, the first feature directed by Top Boy star Ashley Walters, has seven.

Welsh-language film Effi O Blaenau and Queen at Sea have six nominations each, including best British independent film, Variety reports.

Tender Loving Care, the final film from Mike Leigh, is also nominated for best British independent film and best director, Variety says.

Contenders for cinema of the year include the Ultimate Picture Palace in Oxford, which its landlord is threatening to close, The Guardian reports.
