Bob Dylan met Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on Wednesday, CNN and Pitchfork report. The two met in the Apostolic Palace, the pope's residence, CNN says.
The Vatican's newspaper confirmed the meeting, CNN reports. It said the pope had “received in private audience Mr. Robert Allen Zimmerman,” using Dylan's birth name.
Dylan wore a black hoodie with the hood up, Pitchfork reports, citing a photo released by the Vatican. CNN says he also wore a black coat and black gloves. Another photo seems to show Dylan signing a book for the pope, Pitchfork says.
The meeting was set up by Rev. Antonio Spadaro, a Vatican official known for building bridges with wider culture, CNN reports. Spadaro also arranged the pope's meeting with Patti Smith earlier this year.
“It was hard not to feel the emotion of being part of an encounter that had a real sense of history about it,” Spadaro wrote on social media, CNN reports.
The pope knows Dylan's work, CNN says. He quoted an unpublished 1963 Dylan song, “Go Away You Bomb,” in the preface to a collection of his speeches published in July.
The song was an anti-nuclear protest, CNN reports. Leo has stressed the Church's opposition to nuclear weapons, the network says.
Leo is not the first pope Dylan has met. Dylan played at a 1997 church event attended by Pope John Paul II in Bologna, Italy, CNN reports.
The two men are from the Midwest. Leo, whose birth name is Robert Prevost, was born in Chicago, CNN notes.
