Trump's last speech before the midterms centers on the Reflecting Pool
President Donald Trump spent much of his final scheduled speech before Election Day on the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, CNBC reports. He reopened the pool after a troubled renovation. Later on Fox News, he said to Republican voters that "if our people vote, we win in a landslide," the New York Post reports.
President Donald Trump spoke in front of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington on Monday afternoon, in his final scheduled in-person speech before Tuesday's elections, CNBC reports. "Today I'm thrilled to announce the official opening of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool," Trump said.
The speech was expected to serve as Trump's closing argument on the midterms, CNBC reports. But he spent more than 20 minutes at the start on the pool and his other projects in Washington, CNBC says.
The Guardian reports that the renovation cost $14m. After the makeover was first shown in June, an algae bloom turned the water green and the coating began to peel away, the Guardian says.
Trump again blamed vandals for the damage, CNBC and the Guardian report. CNBC calls that unfounded. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said in court on July 31 that a contractor's botched installation caused the damage, CNBC reports.
When he turned to the elections, Trump said the president's party tends to lose seats in midterms. "We gave this a very strong shot," he said, according to CNBC and the Guardian.
Trump also attacked some Democratic candidates by name, including Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, CNBC reports. He repeated his claim that "everybody is going to get $5,000" if Republicans win, CNBC says.
Later on Monday, Trump urged Republican voters to turn out in an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, the New York Post reports. "Pretend I'm on the ballot. Do whatever you want, but we have to vote. If our people vote, we win in a landslide," Trump said, according to the Post.
Trump warned that his policies would be "wiped out" if Democrats took the House and Senate, the Post reports. The White House said he held 30 rallies in 20 states over 32 days of travel, the Post says.
Polls have shown Democratic candidates narrowly ahead in several key Senate races, the Guardian reports. No results had been reported by the cited outlets.
