Russian bombs hit an aid centre and a nearby shelter in the village of Komyshuvakha in southern Ukraine on Monday, the Guardian reports. Ukrainian officials say at least 26 people were killed. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called it "a vile terrorist strike."
Russia on Monday bombed an aid distribution centre and a neighbouring shelter in southern Ukraine, killing at least 26 people, the Guardian reports. The toll came from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the country's emergency services, the Guardian says.
The attack hit the village of Komyshuvakha in the Zaporizhzhia region, the Associated Press reports. Zelenskyy said 10 guided bombs targeted an area that included a school building used to hand out aid, the Associated Press says.
Emergency services said two members of a rescue crew and four police officers were among the dead, the Guardian reports. Five people were being treated in hospital.
"The Russians struck first just as people were arriving - a few aerial bombs," Zelenskyy said in his nightly address, according to the Guardian. "Then there was a second strike - more air bombs, this time on the shelter. A vile terrorist strike."
Rescue efforts on Monday evening were hampered by further Russian drone attacks on the area, a military official in Zaporizhzhia said, according to the Guardian and the Associated Press.
Zelenskyy said the attack showed Russia did not want to build on last week's ceasefire in the southern city of Oleshky, the Guardian reports. "This is further proof that Russia wants no de-escalation," he said, according to the Associated Press.
US-led talks between Russia and Ukraine are set to resume next week, US special envoy Steve Witkoff said on Monday, the Guardian reports.
