Russell Brand's lawyer tells jury that journalists 'poisoned the well'
Russell Brand's lawyer said to jurors that a Channel 4 documentary and newspaper stories "poisoned the well of justice" against the comedian, the BBC reports. Ian Winter KC made the case in his closing speech on Monday. Brand denies rape and sexual assault charges involving six women.
Russell Brand's defence barrister said to jurors on Monday that journalists had "poisoned the well of justice" by prompting women to make criminal allegations against him, the BBC reports.
Ian Winter KC made the remarks in his closing speech at Southwark Crown Court in London, the BBC says.
Brand, 51, denies three charges of rape, three counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted indecent assault against six women, AAP reports. The allegations span 10 years from 1999, AAP says.
Winter said a 2023 Channel 4 Dispatches documentary and stories in the Times and the Sunday Times led people to come forward "very many years after," the BBC reports. He said the women were "thoroughly contaminated by the programme," the BBC reports.
"It is not criminal to treat women unkindly before, during or after sex," Winter said to jurors, according to AAP.
"Can you possibly be sure in this case that out of the many, many women who voluntarily had sex with Mr Brand, that he raped just three of them?" he said, the BBC reports.
Winter reminded jurors that the judge had directed them that the documentary was "very one-sided" and "produced in a dramatic manner," the BBC reports.
He also questioned why none of the women came forward during the MeToo movement, AAP reports. He described the delay between the alleged offences and reports to police as "monstrous," AAP says.
Brand's father-in-law, former golfer Bernard Gallacher, attended the trial on Monday, the BBC reports. The trial continues. The jury has not yet begun its deliberations, according to the cited reports.
Where outlets agree The BBC and AAP agree that Brand's lawyer said in his closing speech on Monday that the 2023 reporting had "poisoned the well" against Brand.
Where they differ The cited reports agree on the key facts so far.
