She died of pancreatic cancer on October 26 at a hospital in Los Angeles, her family and a representative said, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Saint James won an Emmy in 1969 for The Name of the Game, where she played an editorial assistant. She then starred opposite Rock Hudson as Sally McMillan in McMillan & Wife. She left that show in 1976 after a contract dispute, and her character was killed off.
In 1984 she teamed up with Jane Curtin in the sitcom Kate & Allie, about two divorced friends raising their children in a shared home in New York. The show ran until 1989. Saint James and Curtin went head to head for the top comedy actress Emmy in 1984 and 1985, and Curtin won each time, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
After that, she mostly quit acting to raise her children and work with the Special Olympics, the Guardian reports. Her films included Love at First Bite in 1979. She still appeared on shows such as Law & Order: SVU and Suits, and started a business selling baby-gift baskets, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
Saint James was born Susan Jane Miller in Los Angeles in 1946. She worked as a model in Paris before she started acting.
She married TV executive Dick Ebersol in 1981. Their son Teddy died in a plane crash in 2004. Her family said she was "generous with her time and energy" and taught her children "to pause, be kind and look out for other people."
