Bruce Springsteen endorsed Democrat Abdul El-Sayed in the Senate race in Michigan on Monday, Deadline and The Independent report. Voters go to the polls on Tuesday. The Independent says the endorsement came in a post on Instagram, and Deadline says the singer posted it on social media.
“Dr. El-Sayed is a fighter for our American Constitution, he’s a fighter for our American Democracy, and he’s a fighter against the corrupt, lawless, and anti-American leadership currently in the White House,” Springsteen wrote, according to Deadline and The Independent. “That’s why I’m in his corner 100%.”
El-Sayed is running against Republican Mike Rogers, Deadline and The Independent report. Springsteen's post came after Haley Stevens, whom El-Sayed beat in the Democratic primary, endorsed Rogers over the weekend, Deadline and The Independent report.
Springsteen rarely backs a candidate this strongly unless they are running for president, Deadline reports. He has campaigned in past general elections for Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, the outlet says.
Springsteen, 77, has long spoken out against President Donald Trump, Deadline and The Independent report. Deadline says he has done so onstage and in song, including on his tour with the E Street Band this spring. Earlier this year he put out a song called “Streets of Minneapolis,” Deadline and The Independent report.
The White House sent The Independent a statement. “Nobody cares about his endorsement,” said aide Steven Cheung. Rogers had not replied in the reports.
