Sen. Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, was hospitalized after a stroke on Saturday, his office said Sunday, NBC News and Fox News report.
Murphy began to feel numbness in his arm while at his son's hockey game, said Allison Herwitt, his chief of staff. "He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered he had experienced a stroke," she said.
He was then moved to Johns Hopkins for more monitoring. "The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery," Herwitt said.
Murphy, 53, is not up for reelection this year. But he has spent weeks on the campaign trail for other Democrats, the outlets report. He had been set to campaign in New Hampshire on Sunday with Chris Pappas, the Democratic candidate for Senate there.
Fox News reports that Murphy has been seen as a possible 2028 presidential candidate. NBC News notes he is an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump.
Trump said he was "really surprised" to hear about the stroke. "Nobody wants to have that," he said, according to NBC News. Republican senators, including Chuck Grassley of Iowa, also offered prayers.
Three other Senate Democrats have had strokes in recent years, NBC News reports. Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland had strokes in 2022 and have recovered. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania had one while running for his seat that year. Fetterman said he was "rooting for Chris and his family."
His office has not said how long Murphy will stay in the hospital.
