Netflix layoffs reach London as UK production VP Anna Mallett leaves
Netflix has laid off up to 3% of the staff at its London headquarters, according to Variety. Anna Mallett, a vice president of physical production who oversaw the UK, has left amid the shake-up, Variety says. Only Variety has reported the London layoffs so far.
Netflix has laid off up to 3% of the staff at its London headquarters, Variety reports. The office shed 2 to 3% of its workforce in the company's recent reorganization, including some people in its publicity department, Variety says.
Anna Mallett, who ran physical production for Netflix in the UK, has left the company amid the shake-up, Variety reports. She was a vice president and also oversaw shows made in local languages in other regions, Variety says. Variety says her exit was first reported by The Ankler.
Mallett joined Netflix in 2020 from the news producer ITN, where she was CEO, Variety reports. She had earlier held senior roles at BBC Studios. During her time at Netflix, the streamer launched UK hits including "Baby Reindeer" and "Adolescence," Variety says.
The London cuts follow a reorganization in the US last month, Variety reports. Netflix is understood to have cut 1,000 jobs worldwide, Variety says.
Netflix replaced content chief Bela Bajaria with Peter Rice, who previously worked at Disney and Fox, Variety reports. That has raised concerns that more changes may come, especially for shows made outside the US, Variety says.
For now, the two co-CEOs, Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos, say nothing is going to change, at least internationally, Variety reports. "Our local titles from those regions are driving engagement and they're driving business growth," Peters said on the company's most recent earnings call, according to Variety.
Only Variety has reported this so far, and NewsHabit hasn't seen any other outlet confirm the London layoffs.
What we know: Netflix has cut jobs at its London headquarters, and a senior production executive has left.
What we don't: How many people lost their jobs, and whether more cuts are planned outside the US.
Where outlets agree This is one outlet's report, with Variety saying Netflix has laid off up to 3% of its London staff and that production VP Anna Mallett has left.
Where they differ Variety does not say who confirmed the London cuts, and its figure of about 1,000 jobs cut worldwide is what it understands rather than a Netflix statement, with no one cited here disputing the report.
