Kochetkov goes 10-0 as Hurricanes blank Jets 7-0
Goalie Pyotr Kochetkov made 26 saves as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Winnipeg Jets 7-0 on Sunday, the Associated Press and the North State Journal report. He is now 10-0 this season. He is the third goalie in NHL history to win his first 10 decisions of a season.
Pyotr Kochetkov made 26 saves for a shutout as the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Winnipeg Jets 7-0 on Sunday in Raleigh, the Associated Press and the North State Journal report.
The win was the goalie's 10th in a row to start the season. He is the third goalie in NHL history to open a season 10-0, the AP reports. He tied Carey Price, who did it with Montreal 10 years ago. Only Jack Campbell has a longer run, with 11 wins for Toronto in 2020-21.
The streak is also a new team record for Carolina, the North State Journal reports. Kochetkov was named the NHL's Third Star of the Month after going 9-0 in October.
Defenseman Sean Walker scored twice, including a short-handed goal in the first period. Sebastian Aho, Juuso Valimaki, Logan Stankoven, Mark Jankowski and Jesperi Kotkaniemi also scored.
Carolina scored four goals in the first 10 minutes of the second period. Jets goalie Stuart Skinner made 12 saves and was pulled after the fifth goal. Winnipeg had just five shots on goal at that point.
"I think we just have a group that comes in and just handles business," Walker said, according to the North State Journal.
The Hurricanes have won four straight and are 12-2-2. Their 26 points lead the league by four, the North State Journal reports. The Jets have lost nine in a row.
Carolina plays at Nashville on Tuesday. Winnipeg visits Montreal the same night.
