The Denver Broncos rallied to beat the Kansas City Chiefs 28-24 on Sunday, the Associated Press and DenverSports report. Defensive tackle Malcolm Roach sacked Patrick Mahomes on the final play to seal the win. Denver moved to 6-2 and into first place in the AFC West, a half-game ahead of Kansas City at 5-2, the AP reports.

The Chiefs had the ball at the Denver 1-yard line late in the game. Mahomes threw what looked like the winning touchdown to Rashee Rice, but a false start on right tackle Jaylon Moore wiped it out, the AP reports. On the next snap, Roach broke through and dropped Mahomes for a 6-yard loss as time ran out. DenverSports says Roach brought him down at the 12.

Denver trailed 24-13 early in the fourth quarter. Bo Nix threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Nate Adkins and found Jaylen Waddle for a 2-point conversion, the AP reports. Alex Singleton then sacked Mahomes, and Harrison Butker missed a 54-yard field goal wide right. Nix hit rookie Jonah Coleman for a 51-yard gain, and Coleman ran in from 5 yards for the go-ahead score.

The AP says the Broncos have won 15 straight one-score games over two seasons. DenverSports says Denver has won 15 straight regular-season games decided by one score, tying the 2008-09 Indianapolis Colts for the longest streak in NFL history. Nix now has 13 fourth-quarter comebacks in his career, the outlets report.

Mahomes went 30 of 41 for 321 yards and three touchdowns, the AP reports. Nix was 20 of 32 for 222 yards and two scores. It was coach Sean Payton's 200th career win. "I'm proud of the grit," he said. Denver visits the Carolina Panthers next Sunday.

What we know: Denver won on a final-play sack and leads the AFC West.
What we don't: Whether the Broncos can keep winning close games, with the season series split.
