A shooting late Saturday night on East Main Street in Newark, Delaware, near the University of Delaware, drew a large police response, CBS Philadelphia and NBC10 reported. Police said the shooting happened near Choate Street.

Lt. Greg D'Elia, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department, said six victims were taken to the hospital, the Newark Post reported. He said no information about their conditions was available. Earlier, CBS Philadelphia and NBC10 reported that police had not said how many people were shot.

Police said there did not appear to be an ongoing threat to the public, the three outlets reported. "The investigation remains active as Newark Police detectives work to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting," D'Elia said, the Newark Post reported.

The shots were fired on the south sidewalk of Main Street, across from Choate Street, the Newark Post reported. Main Street and its bars were crowded with people in Halloween costumes at the time, the paper said. A video on social media showed a crowd of people running down the street, NBC10 reported.

The University of Delaware sent an emergency alert about the shooting and urged people to avoid the area, CBS Philadelphia and NBC10 reported. Police closed Main Street from Library Avenue through Academy Street and asked drivers and walkers to stay away, CBS Philadelphia reported.

Detectives looked over debris on the sidewalk and searched for evidence near parked cars, the Newark Post reported. An officer flew a drone over the scene, and officers from several other agencies helped, the paper said. A portion of Main Street stayed closed for five hours. Police asked anyone with video of the shooting to send it to them, the paper reported.
