The United States canceled the usual group photo at a G20 meeting in Atlanta, the BBC and the Guardian report. Several countries had refused to stand with Russia's top diplomat, Sergei Lavrov. The foreign ministers' photo had been set for Friday.

About one in three countries at the talks said they would not pose with any Russian officials, the Guardian reports. Britain, Australia and several European nations were among them. "There is no normality with Russia," German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said before the session.

An American official said the photo was dropped "after it became clear some of the delegations were unwilling to participate," the BBC reports. The official said the goal was to keep the focus on the talks.

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband spoke directly to Lavrov at the meeting. "We all know who the aggressor in this war is," he said, the BBC reports. Australia's Penny Wong also condemned the invasion of Ukraine in front of Lavrov, the Guardian says.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the host, opened the talks with a call for unity. Ukraine, which is not a G20 member, was not invited, and neither was member South Africa, the Guardian reports. Participants said the splits will probably prevent a joint statement when the meeting ends Saturday.

Diplomats said the ministers agreed to work to make next month's G20 summit of world leaders a success, the Guardian reports. President Donald Trump will host it in Florida.

What we know: The G20 group photo was canceled after many delegations refused to pose with Lavrov.
What we don't: Whether the ministers will agree on any joint statement.
