A Russian jet-powered drone hit a crowded platform at the main train station in Dnipro on Thursday. Ukrainian officials say at least 14 people were killed. The BBC, DW and CBS News reported the toll. Regional head Oleksandr Hanzha said at least 14 others were wounded, including an 11-year-old boy, the BBC reported.
People on the platform were waiting for a train to Zaporizhzhia, the state railway firm Ukrzaliznytsia said. "Despite an increased threat warning, people were on the platform," the company said, DW reported. Ukraine's air force said it shot down three drones in the attack, but a fourth got through and hit the station.
A UN statement on Thursday gave a lower count. Matthias Schmale, the UN humanitarian coordinator for Ukraine, said at least 13 civilians were reported killed and 10 hurt at the station. DW said the toll later rose to 14. "Train journeys must never end in death and devastation," his statement said. Russia's military has not publicly commented, the BBC said.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the attack "horrific" and urged allies to keep up pressure on Moscow. "Sanctions against Moscow and its war machine must not be eased for as long as this Russian war continues," he said, DW reported. He pointed to a deal this month between President Trump and Vladimir Putin that eased some sanctions. Prime Minister Sergiy Koretskyi said Russia is "deliberately hunting civilians." French President Emmanuel Macron voiced "deep concern."
Other cities were hit too. A Russian missile killed two 15-year-old girls in Chernihiv, officials said. In Kremenchuk, a drone struck homes and killed at least two people. CBS News said 56 people were hurt across the strikes, including 10 children. Dnipro and Chernihiv held a day of mourning on Friday, the BBC said. The strike came as a local truce holds around Oleshky, in the Kherson region, CBS News noted.
