Samsung Electronics said Thursday its quarterly operating profit hit a record 107.4 trillion won, the Associated Press and CNBC report. The AP puts that at about $80.5 billion. Strong demand for memory chips used in AI drove the gain.

Revenue for July to September rose to a record of about 195.3 trillion won, the outlets report. It was the company's fourth straight quarter of record profit and revenue. CNBC reports operating profit rose about 783 percent from a year earlier.

Samsung said it is the first global tech company to pass 100 trillion won in quarterly operating profit, CNBC reports. Its chip business made 106.5 trillion won of that profit.

But the results were broadly in line with forecasts, and shares closed 4.13 percent lower, CNBC reports. "Investors have been so spoilt by the AI trade that a record result is now treated as the bare minimum," said eToro analyst Josh Gilbert. He said Samsung now depends heavily on memory prices.

Samsung expects demand for AI chips to speed up through 2027 and outpace supply, the AP reports. It plans to sell more high-bandwidth memory and server chips.

CNBC reports Samsung announced 30 trillion won in dividends for the quarter. It plans to return another 55 trillion to 75 trillion won to shareholders this year.

The report came a day after rival SK Hynix posted its own record profit. The two firms control about two-thirds of the world's memory market, the AP reports. South Korea's central bank has warned the economy is becoming too reliant on chips.

What we know: Samsung posted record profit for a fourth straight quarter on AI chip demand.
What we don't: How long memory chip prices will stay this high.
