Manchester City and Liverpool each needed penalty shootouts on Wednesday to reach the quarterfinals of the English League Cup, the BBC and the Associated Press report.

Holders City came from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Brighton at home. They then won the shootout 4-3, the AP reports. Backup goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli saved Brighton's last two kicks, from Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk. City had fallen behind when Mateo Kovacic's kick was saved.

Liverpool beat Chelsea 6-5 in a shootout after a 1-1 draw at Anfield, the AP reports. The two goals in normal play came from the penalty spot. Wesley Fofana missed the final kick, sending it well over the bar.

The two clubs avoided the fate of Arsenal. On Tuesday, Arsenal lost on penalties to fourth-tier Fleetwood Town. The AP calls it one of the biggest shocks in the competition's 66-year history. The BBC reports Fleetwood is the lowest-ranked side left in the competition.

In other games Wednesday, Bournemouth beat Aston Villa 3-0, Crystal Palace won 1-0 at Fulham, and Sunderland beat Brentford 3-2, the AP reports.

The quarterfinal draw was held later Wednesday, the BBC reports. City will host third-tier Bradford City. Liverpool will host Bournemouth, and Crystal Palace will play Sunderland.

Fleetwood will face Everton or Newcastle. Those two clubs meet Thursday in the last game of the round. The quarterfinals will be played in the week of December 14, the BBC reports.

What we know: City and Liverpool won shootouts and are into the quarterfinals.
What we don't: Whether Fleetwood will face Everton or Newcastle.
