A police guard shot and killed a knife-wielding attacker outside Israel's embassy in Belgrade, Serbia, early Wednesday, BBC, DW and Fox News report. Serbian officials called it a terrorist attack.
Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said the attacker rushed at the officer with two knives while shouting "Allahu Akbar." The officer suffered a minor knife wound to the face and shot the attacker. Dacic said the guard acted in self-defense.
Fox News reports, citing Serbian prosecutors, that the attacker opened the door of the guard booth at about 12:15 am local time. He then threw one of his knives, striking the officer in the left cheek. The officer fired several rounds, killing him at the scene.
Dacic said the attacker was a minor and a Serbian citizen whom security services had been watching as a supporter of the Islamic State group. DW and Fox News report he was thought to come from the western town of Sabac. Dacic said he had posted the group's flag on Instagram.
Serbia raised its terror threat level to red alert, its highest. Dacic said that means more police and tighter checks at key sites and crowded places. The BBC reports the injured officer did not need hospital care.
Israel's foreign ministry said no embassy staff were hurt and the mission was closed at the time. It called the incident an attempted terrorist attack.
It is the second attack at the embassy in less than three years. In June 2024, a man shot a guard with a crossbow before being shot dead. The latest attack came a day after Israel's election.
