Oleshky truce starts hours after Kyiv metro strike
A local pause in fighting took effect in Oleshky early Tuesday. Melania Trump helped broker the deal, CNN, BBC News, and AP said. A Russian strike on Kyiv hours earlier killed one person and hit a metro stop, the mayor said.
A local ceasefire in the Russian-held city of Oleshky took effect early Tuesday. CNN, BBC News, NBC News, and the Associated Press reported the news. Ukraine's human rights chief Dmytro Lubinets said the pause began at three in the morning Kyiv time. Russia's defense ministry said it stopped shelling toward Oleshky at the same hour.
The pause is meant to move out older residents and bring in aid. Russia seized the town in the first days of the 2022 invasion. Ukrainian officials say about 1,700 people still live there. Melania Trump's office said she led talks with civilian negotiators from both sides after United Nations briefings. The aid trip itself was still set for later in the week when the pages ran.
The truce began hours after a Russian missile hit Kyiv on Monday. Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least one person was killed near a strike site. He said a metro station and medical sites were damaged. Seven other people were hurt across the city, he added. Fighting in other parts of Ukraine was not part of the local deal. Both sides kept the right to act elsewhere.
Aid workers had hoped the pause would open a short window to reach people cut off for months. Officials said the mission would focus on food, medicine, and safe routes out for those who want to leave. No large prisoner swap was part of the Oleshky plan on the pages.
