Four people have been rescued from a collapsed building in Kenya's capital as operations entered a third night, according to the Associated Press. Relatives said they were losing hope of finding others trapped alive. The 18-story building collapsed Friday on a busy commercial street in Nairobi.

Several people remain missing. Some were reported to have communicated with loved ones from beneath the rubble earlier in the search. Police said more than 10 stories were under construction when the floors pancaked in the Eastleigh area.

Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said Friday that seven people had been reported missing and rescue teams had made contact with some of those trapped. The Kenya Red Cross later said missing-person reports had risen sharply as families came forward. The Associated Press filed successive wire updates as the rescued count rose to four.

Heavy equipment and hand crews worked through dust and unstable concrete. Shopkeepers nearby described sudden shaking before the fall. Building safety enforcement is a long-running issue in Nairobi's fast-growing districts.

What we know: Four people have been pulled out alive, and others remain missing under the Nairobi collapse.
What we don't: A final death toll, and whether more survivors will be reached. Only the Associated Press has reported this so far; NewsHabit hasn't seen independent confirmation.
