More than 82,000 UK homes lost power Sunday morning as Storm Boelo brought strong overnight winds and floods, The Guardian reported. The Energy Networks Association said crews had restored power to 344,900 customers by Sunday morning, while about 82,600 remained cut off. More than 30,000 of the homes still without power were in Scotland, The Guardian said.
Winds widely reached 60 to 70 mph under an amber warning that began Saturday evening, the Met Office said. Gusts reached 84 mph in Argyll and Bute and 82 mph on Tiree, The Guardian reported. The Daily Record said the 84 mph reading came from Machrihanish on the Kintyre coast. Met Office chief forecaster Jason Kelly said the strongest winds and the greatest risk of disruption would be in the north. Amber warnings cover mainland Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland, and the far north of England.
Floods wrecked shops and a restaurant in the town center of Largs, Scotland. The Daily Record said the owner of Tha-Tien-Thai restaurant said it was the third flood this year and the worst damage. The owner said kitchen appliances were strewn in flood water and a new freezer bought Friday was ruined. Geraldo's, a family-run tourist shop in Largs, also took major damage, the Record said. Owner Toni Dawson said she was clearing the shop and waiting for builders to board up the front before the next high tide.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks said just over 24,000 customers in the north still needed power late Sunday morning. That company figure ran in PA copy via The Independent. SP Energy Networks said about 6,000 homes were without power Sunday morning, mainly in Ayrshire and Dumfries and Galloway. Trains faced flooded tracks, fallen trees, and speed limits across Scotland, The Guardian and the Daily Record reported. The amber wind warning runs through Sunday evening.
