Wendy's launched a $7.99 Dave's Single combo for a limited time starting October 19, Restaurant Dive and QSR Magazine reported. The meal includes a Dave's Single burger, small fries and a drink.

Restaurant Dive said same-store sales have fallen in six of the last eight quarters. Robert Wright, the chain's chief executive, has said traffic is down, the value pitch has slipped and franchise owners face pressure, according to Restaurant Dive. The company is rebuilding value under a turnaround it calls Project Fresh.

Wright has said earlier value offers such as Biggie Bags grew too complex and less compelling, Restaurant Dive reported. Steve Cirulis, the chief financial officer, has said the focus is restoring value across the full menu board, not only a small value section. The Dave's Single combo fits that approach by pricing a full meal rather than a snack bundle, Restaurant Dive said.

QSR Magazine said the combo is available in restaurants, drive-thrus and through the Wendy's app and website. Wendy's said price and participation may vary by market and that the offer is not valid with other discounts. No substitutions are allowed, the company said, according to QSR Magazine.

Other fast-food chains have also used combo pricing to push traffic. Restaurant Dive noted that McDonald's brought back Extra Value Meals last year to cut the cost of core combos. If the Dave's Single deal works, Wendy's may trim prices on other core combos as short-term traffic drivers while it resets operations, Restaurant Dive reported.

The chain is pitching the offer as a simple meal deal after quarters of soft sales. Franchise owners have been waiting for a clearer value message, Restaurant Dive said.

What we know: Wendy's is selling a $7.99 Dave's Single combo for a limited time as it tries to fix its value pitch.
What we don't: How long the offer will run, or whether it lifts same-store sales.
