France opens racist terror probe after Trappes shooting
France opened a racist terror probe after a gunman killed one person and wounded others west of Paris, the BBC and Le Parisien reported. President Emmanuel Macron called it a racist terror attack. Suspect Kevin T, 39, was held, the reports said.
President Emmanuel Macron called a Friday gun attack west of Paris "a racist terrorist attack," the BBC reported. One person was killed and five were wounded. State lawyers opened a murder case tied to a terror plan with a racist motive, Le Parisien reported. Macron said people were targeted over skin color or faith. He called the attack a turning point for France, the BBC said.
The gunman drove a Renault Clio through Trappes and La Verriere. He fired on people for about 15 minutes, the BBC and Le Parisien reported. Mayor Ali Rabeh said the shooter fired at random and wanted carnage. Le Parisien said he killed a 26-year-old man and wounded four others, including a 12-year-old girl. The BBC said three of the wounded, including the girl, were still in bad shape.
French media named the suspect Kevin T, 39. He was known to police for theft, drugs and drunk driving but not to intel services, Le Parisien reported. State lawyers said he had four old cases that had been wiped and was not on a serious-threat list, the BBC reported. Anti-crime officers held him in Coignieres. A close family member was also held, the BBC reported.
Before he left home he rigged his flat with gas cans and a timer. That brought in RAID and bomb teams, Le Parisien reported. He used a World War II STEN gun, Le Parisien said. The Elysee called it a racist terror attack. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez called it a terror crime, Le Parisien reported.
