The family of Kohen Wiley, a 1-year-old shot and killed by police in Mississippi, wants a federal investigation, according to the Guardian and WVUE Fox 8.

Kohen was shot by a Senatobia police officer on June 14 in a Walmart parking lot, WVUE Fox 8 reported.

On Monday, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch said the shooting was justified, the outlets reported.

Since then, video of the shooting has been made public, the Guardian said. A Mississippi outlet, Darkhorse Press, first reported it, according to the Guardian.

The family watched the footage Thursday, the outlets reported. Their lawyers, Ben Crump and Van Turner, then held a press conference, they said.

"The word 'justified' has haunted me since Monday," said Veronica Roberson, Kohen's grandmother, according to the outlets.

Crump called the footage "excessive from the very start," the Guardian reported. Officers had their guns drawn as they approached a car with two women and the baby, the Guardian said.

Police were answering a call about stolen diapers, according to early reports, the Guardian said. Crump noted that neither woman was arrested for shoplifting, it reported.

Three bullets were fired, Crump said, according to WVUE Fox 8. "The third bullet from the side, the bullet that killed one-year-old baby Kohen Wiley, was not justified," he said.

"We're going to petition the Department of Justice to open an investigation," Turner said, according to WVUE Fox 8.

The officer resigned after being cleared, Turner said, according to WVUE Fox 8. The family wants him barred from police work, it said.

Kohen would have turned 2 on November 1, the Guardian reported.

What we know: The family is asking the Department of Justice to investigate after the state ruled the shooting justified.
What we don't: Whether federal officials will open an investigation.
