A federal judge has ordered Donald Trump to sit for a deposition by December 11 in his lawsuit against the BBC, according to the Guardian and NBC News. The BBC, which also reported the order, is the defendant in the case.

A deposition is an interview under oath, the BBC explained.

Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett said Trump could face sanctions if he does not comply, the outlets reported. The harshest would be dismissing the lawsuit, they said.

Trump is suing the BBC for $10 billion, the Guardian reported. The case is over a Panorama documentary that edited together two parts of a speech he gave on January 6, 2021, the outlets reported.

The BBC has apologized for the edit, the BBC said. It has asked the court to dismiss the case, saying the program was not available in the United States, it reported.

Trump canceled an earlier deposition set for October 16, citing "matters of national importance," the outlets reported. A BBC lawyer said in court that Trump was campaigning in Georgia that day, they said.

The judge also said Trump's team had not handed over enough documents, the Guardian reported. She gave them 30 days to do so, it said.

"The court is not satisfied that anyone is doing a thorough job," Lett said, according to the Guardian.

She also refused a request to stop the seven-hour deposition from being videotaped, the Guardian reported. Only lawyers in the case will be able to see the video, it said.

Trump's lawyers said in a Wednesday filing that he could appear between January 11 and 22, the BBC reported.

The deadline could change if a district judge extends the schedule, the outlets reported.

What we know: Trump must sit for a deposition by December 11 or risk sanctions.
What we don't: Whether the court will extend the deadline.
