Calley Means, a top adviser to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and a leader of the "Make America Healthy Again" movement, resigned Thursday, according to NBC News, CNN, Politico and Axios.

"I am resigning from the White House with tremendous respect for President Trump and RFK," Means said in a statement to NBC News. CNN quoted his statement as saying he was leaving "with tremendous respect for President Trump and Bobby Kennedy." In a post on X, he praised their fight against "entrenched, dark forces in DC," Axios and CNN reported.

Three people familiar with the matter said he grew frustrated over delays to key MAHA policies, CNN reported. One source said the last straw was the lack of progress on rolling out a federal definition of ultraprocessed foods, NBC News reported. That source also pointed to a Trump order to boost supply of the weed killer glyphosate, NBC News reported. Politico said he left over frustration that the MAHA agenda had stalled inside the White House.

Means was widely credited with introducing Kennedy to Trump, CNN reported. He held a temporary White House role and later became a top adviser at the Department of Health and Human Services, CNN reported. NBC News said he moved into the full-time adviser job after he sold his stake in his wellness company, Truemed.

His exit comes less than two weeks before the midterm elections, Politico reported. Many MAHA supporters say they are disillusioned with the White House, Politico reported. Earlier this month, a group of MAHA activists put out a "scorecard" that said the administration had failed most of its promises, CNN reported.

In his statement, Means pointed to wins, NBC News reported. They include limits on soda purchases with food stamps and new dietary guidelines that call for less ultraprocessed food, according to NBC News.

"We are grateful for Calley Means' time in the Trump Administration," White House spokesperson Allison Schuster said, according to CNN.

Trump had picked Means' sister, Casey Means, to be surgeon general, but that nomination was later withdrawn, CNN and Axios reported.

What we know: Means resigned Thursday and praised Trump and Kennedy on his way out.
What we don't: Who will take over his work on food policy.
