Airbnb bars hosts from making guests do big checkout chores
Airbnb hosts can no longer make guests do big chores like washing dishes or stripping beds at checkout, The Verge, CBC News and the BBC reported. The rule covers stays booked on or after November 20. Hosts can still make "reasonable" requests.
Airbnb is limiting the chores hosts can ask guests to do before they leave, according to The Verge, CBC News and the BBC. The new rules apply to stays booked on or after November 20.
Under the policy, hosts cannot ask guests to do tasks that "require significant effort or time, or would typically be performed by a cleaner," The Verge and the BBC reported. Those tasks include stripping the bed, taking trash offsite and washing and putting away dishes, CBC News and the BBC reported.
Guests have long complained about paying a cleaning fee and then getting a list of chores, CBC News and the BBC reported. Under the change, hosts can no longer charge guests if a cleaning task is left undone, CBC News reported. Hosts also cannot charge fines, the BBC and CBC News reported.
Hosts can set seven standard house rules and add other "reasonable" requests, the BBC reported. The rules must show on the listing at the time of booking, CBC News reported. Hosts cannot slip in extra rules through messages or signs, The Verge reported. A listing may show an "includes cleaning requests" warning, it said.
Airbnb allows some exceptions. Guests may be asked to limit shower time during drought rules, or to put trash in an animal-proof bin in bear country, CBC News reported, citing the policy. If a request breaks the rules, it will be flagged, and the host can appeal, the BBC reported.
"House rules help guests understand what hosts expect, but we've heard from our community that they can be confusing, onerous and hard to manage," Airbnb said, according to the BBC.
Not all hosts are happy. Some pushed back on Airbnb's forums, saying the limits pose health risks, The Verge reported. They argued that guests can simply skip listings with strict rules, it said.
Makarand Mody, a hospitality professor at Boston University, said cleaning is "the biggest gripe" for guests, CBC News reported. He said Airbnb left the word "reasonable" open to give hosts some room. "Hosts are also their customers," he said.
What we know: From November 20, hosts cannot require major cleaning chores at checkout.
What we don't: How strictly Airbnb will enforce the rules.
