The Oklahoma City Thunder beat the San Antonio Spurs 116-104 on the NBA's opening night. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 points, and Jared McCain added 20 off the bench. Spurs star Victor Wembanyama made just one of his 13 shots from the field.
The Oklahoma City Thunder beat the San Antonio Spurs 116-104 on Tuesday in the first game of the 2026-27 NBA season for both teams, a rematch of last season's Western Conference finals.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 32 points, five rebounds and four assists, Bleacher Report reported. Jared McCain scored 20 points off the bench and made six 3-pointers. Chet Holmgren added 14 points and four blocks.
Spurs star Victor Wembanyama had a rough night. He made one of his 13 shots from the field and missed all four of his 3-point tries, ClutchPoints reported. Ten of his 12 points came at the free-throw line. His only field goal came in the final seconds of the third quarter, an alley-oop dunk from a De'Aaron Fox pass. He still had 13 rebounds and six blocks, according to Bleacher Report.
ClutchPoints said Wembanyama did not have a single game last season with fewer than three made field goals. In the seven-game conference finals against Oklahoma City, he averaged 27.3 points on 48.1% shooting, the site reported.
Tempers flared in the second quarter after Fox threw Holmgren to the ground, Bleacher Report reported. Fox was called for a flagrant foul, Wembanyama got a technical and all three of the Thunder's Williams players, Jaylin, Jalen and Kenrich, were given technicals too. Oklahoma City led by 21 points at halftime.
Stephon Castle led San Antonio with 24 points, and Dylan Harper added 18. The Spurs won Game 7 of last season's conference finals on the road in Oklahoma City before falling short in the NBA Finals.
What we know: The Thunder won by 12 as Gilgeous-Alexander scored 32 and Wembanyama shot 1 for 13.
What we don't: Whether Wembanyama's cold start was a one-game slump, as ClutchPoints suggests.
Where outlets agree Bleacher Report and ClutchPoints both report the 116-104 Thunder win and say Wembanyama made one of 13 shots from the field.
Where they differ Bleacher Report credits Oklahoma City's defense and a 21-point halftime lead, while ClutchPoints calls Wembanyama's night an outlier and says Spurs fans have no reason to panic.
