Storm Adam has killed at least five people along Spain's Mediterranean coast, Sur in English and The Independent reported Tuesday. Heavy rain flooded towns in Valencia and Alicante and disrupted travel as far away as Ibiza.
Two women died, Sur in English reported. One was swept away by floodwater in Cabrera de Mar, in the province of Barcelona, and another died while swimming at Almardà beach in Sagunto. Two more people died on the border between Valencia and Alicante: an elderly woman trapped in her flooded home in Oliva, and a man who had a fatal heart attack at a campsite. A fifth person died in Malaga province when rocks loosened by rain struck a car, according to Sur.
The town of Pego saw 400 millimeters of rain in four hours and 800 millimeters in 24 hours, Sur reported. The Independent put Pego's total at 632 millimeters in 36 hours. In nearby Oliva, water rose to more than 1.5 meters in some streets.
More than 200 Oliva residents were stranded on rooftops, Sur reported. Eleven helicopters lifted people to safety, while crews used dinghies, kayaks and paddleboards. The Guardia Civil said officers rescued up to 2,000 people across southern Valencia's coast, according to Sur.
The Valencia regional government ordered about 850,000 people in 145 towns to limit their movements during the day on Monday, the paper reported. About 10 roads were closed. Ibiza's airport closed twice, The Independent reported, and dozens of flights were canceled.
Red weather warnings have since been lowered as conditions improve, The Independent reported. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez was expected to visit Valencia on Tuesday. NewsHabit first reported on Storm Adam on Tuesday.
