Liverpool comes back from two goals down to beat Villarreal 4-3
Liverpool came back from two goals down to beat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield in the Champions League. Teenager Rio Ngumoha set up two goals, and Alexis Mac Allister scored twice. Liverpool has now won all three of their games in the competition.
Liverpool beat Villarreal 4-3 at Anfield on Tuesday after falling two goals behind, keeping a perfect record of three wins from three games in this season's Champions League, BBC Sport and Sky Sports reported.
Villarreal scored in the fourth minute when Georges Mikautadze took advantage of a poor header by Virgil van Dijk, Sky Sports reported. The network said it was the earliest Liverpool had fallen behind at Anfield in a major European game in 25 years. Sergi Cardona then made it 2-0.
Alexis Mac Allister headed in a corner to pull one back. Rio Ngumoha, 18, then set up Ronald Araujo to tie the score before halftime, according to BBC Sport.
After the break, Ngumoha dribbled past Cardona and held off Juan Foyth to set up Mac Allister's second goal, BBC Sport reported. Florian Wirtz made it 4-2 with a left-footed finish. Tani Oluwaseyi pulled one back for Villarreal late on, Sky Sports reported.
Ngumoha did not score, but he was named UEFA's player of the match, according to BBC Sport. He had 12 touches in Villarreal's penalty area and completed seven of his eight dribbles. Fans chanted his name, and the stadium played "Rio" by Duran Duran at the final whistle.
"It's up there with one of the best I've played. I enjoyed myself out there," Ngumoha said on Amazon Prime, according to Sky Sports and BBC Sport. He made his England debut earlier this season, BBC Sport reported, and the broadcaster said contract talks with him are ongoing.
Sky Sports noted that Liverpool has given up three goals in each of their last two Champions League games but won both.
What we know: Liverpool won 4-3 after trailing 2-0 and have won all three of their Champions League games.
What we don't: Whether Liverpool can fix the defensive lapses that let in three goals again.
Where outlets agree BBC Sport and Sky Sports both report that Liverpool came from 2-0 down to win 4-3, with two Ngumoha assists and two goals from Mac Allister.
Where they differ BBC Sport says Ngumoha completed seven of eight dribbles and had 12 touches in Villarreal's box, while Sky Sports blames Van Dijk's header for the fourth-minute opener and questions Liverpool's defending.
