Jalen Hurts likely out for season with blood clots in lungs
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season after tests found blood clots in his leg and both lungs. He is on blood thinners and cannot play contact football while taking them. The team says a full recovery is expected.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is likely out for the rest of the 2026 season after doctors found blood clots in his lungs, the team and his agent, Nicole Lynn, said Monday, The Philadelphia Inquirer and NBC10 reported.
Hurts was first diagnosed by specialists in London with a superficial clot in a vein in his left calf, according to the joint statement. After more tests, the diagnosis is now deep vein thrombosis and "bilateral pulmonary emboli," meaning clots in both lungs. He "is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations," the statement said.
His treatment is blood thinners, and while he takes them he cannot take part in any contact activities, including football. "Jalen's prognosis is very good, and we expect a full recovery," the statement said, adding that he is not expected to have long-term effects. He will stay active around the team and keep conditioning.
The first clot was found on an Oct. 10 ultrasound after the team arrived in London, NBC10 reported. Hurts had reported taking a cleat to the calf in the Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, the Inquirer reported. He played in London, but a follow-up ultrasound in Philadelphia showed the clot had moved, NBC10 reported.
Why Hurts flew back from London after the earlier diagnosis drew scrutiny Monday, the Inquirer reported. Coach Nick Sirianni did not answer specific questions about the team's decisions on his care. "We always put the players' health first and foremost in every situation," he said.
Hurts will probably need blood thinners for at least three months, local doctors not involved in his care said, the Inquirer reported. Thomas Meyer of Main Line Health said the clots are probably small, based on the team's description.
Backup Tanner McKee started Sunday in a 25-14 loss to the Carolina Panthers and will remain the starter, NBC10 reported. Hurts, 28, is on injured reserve.
What we know: Hurts has clots in his leg and both lungs and is on blood thinners that rule out football for now.
What we don't: How long his treatment will last and whether he could return this season.
Where outlets agree The Inquirer and NBC10 both report that Hurts was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis and clots in both lungs and is likely out for the season.
Where they differ The cited reports agree on the key facts so far.
