Gwyneth Paltrow to star in Netflix thriller series 'The Apology'
Netflix ordered two seasons of "The Apology," an A24 thriller starring Gwyneth Paltrow in her first lead TV role, according to Deadline. She plays a mother whose son was murdered 18 years earlier. Thomas Vinterberg will direct the series, and Joe Murtagh is the showrunner.
Netflix has ordered two seasons of "The Apology," a thriller series from A24 and Cut To starring Gwyneth Paltrow in her first lead TV role, Deadline reported as an exclusive Monday. TheWrap also reported the order, citing media reports.
Netflix bought the competitive project preemptively, Deadline reported. The streamer declined to comment. Oscar winner Thomas Vinterberg, who made "Another Round," will direct.
The series, written by showrunner Joe Murtagh, follows Evelyn and Caleb Amspoker, whose son was murdered 18 years ago in a cold case that gripped the nation, Deadline reported. When a stranger appears and confesses, justice finally seems possible, until they learn the killer may get a reduced sentence. The couple then decide to take matters into their own hands. Paltrow plays Evelyn.
Joe Hipps of Cut To will executive produce with Murtagh, Vinterberg and Paltrow, Deadline reported.
Paltrow, an Oscar winner for "Shakespeare in Love," has worked with Netflix before. She appeared in two seasons of "The Politician" and in "The Goop Lab," an unscripted series tied to her lifestyle brand, TheWrap reported.
The order comes during a rough stretch at Netflix. Last week the company laid off about 1,000 employees, about 6% of its staff, and replaced content chief Bela Bajaria with Peter Rice, TheWrap reported. Film chief Dan Lin was pushed out Monday. The order was led by Jinny Howe, head of U.S. and Canada scripted series, Deadline reported. Rice, who started Monday, was not involved in the decision, Deadline reported, citing sources.
Two-season orders for new shows have become rare at Netflix, TheWrap reported. Deadline noted that Netflix launched its original programming with a two-season order for "House of Cards" in 2011.
What we know: Netflix ordered two seasons, with Paltrow starring and Vinterberg directing.
