Russian ballistic missiles struck Kyiv overnight into Monday, October 19, killing a 21-year-old woman and injuring eight people, the Kyiv Post and the Kyiv Independent reported, citing Ukrainian officials.

Explosions shook the capital just before 11 at night on Sunday, with more attacks at about 3 and 7 in the morning, Kyiv Independent journalists in the city reported. Ukraine's emergency service reported damage in at least three districts, the Kyiv Independent reported.

The strike damaged the above-ground part of the Chernihivska metro station on the city's left bank, the Kyiv Post reported. The Chernihivska and Lisova stations were closed for repairs, the Kyiv Independent reported, citing city officials.

In the Solomianskyi district, debris hit a 25-story apartment building and a medical facility, the Kyiv Post and the Kyiv Independent reported. Five people were hurt in that district, Kyiv's mayor said, according to the Kyiv Independent. The blast shattered more than 200 windows at the medical center, but no staff or patients were hurt, the mayor said.

The Cosmo Multimall shopping center was badly damaged, the Kyiv Post and the Kyiv Independent reported. The attack also destroyed a data center run by the telecom company Datagroup, which said it cannot be restored and that none of its staff were hurt, the Kyiv Post reported.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia fired 16 ballistic missiles, mainly at Kyiv and the region around it, the Kyiv Independent reported. In Irpin, near Kyiv, six people were hurt, including three children, and three were missing, regional officials said, according to the Kyiv Independent.

Zelensky said Kyiv again got no advance warning of the launches from its partners, the Kyiv Independent reported. A Kyiv Post correspondent heard the strikes before the air raid alert sounded, the Kyiv Post reported. Alerts did sound before the strikes but were unusually short, the Kyiv Independent reported.

The attack came hours after Zelensky said on NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday that US intelligence sharing with Ukraine had resumed, the Kyiv Post reported.
