A National Guard member was shot in the leg late Sunday after a group of Guard members tried to break up a street fight in Washington, WJLA, ABC News and WTOP reported. WJLA and WTOP reported that it happened on Capitol Hill. The man police say fired the shot was also wounded.
The shooting happened in the 400 block of 8th Street SE, WJLA and ABC News reported. WJLA put the time at about 11:10 p.m. and said the block is in the Eastern Market neighborhood. WTOP reported that it happened less than a block from Eastern Market.
About seven or eight Guard members were sitting in a van when they saw a fight on the sidewalk and got out to stop it, interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said, WJLA reported. A person in the fight pulled out a gun and fired, police said, according to WJLA and WTOP.
The Guard members ordered the man to drop the gun, WJLA and ABC News reported. "He discharged a round at the National Guard members who returned fire at that suspect," Carroll said, WJLA reported. Three Guard members fired their weapons, WJLA and ABC News reported. The suspect was hit in the abdomen, WJLA and ABC News reported. WJLA reported that investigators have not yet found which Guard member's shot hit him.
Both the Guard member and the suspect were taken to hospitals, and their injuries are not considered life-threatening, WJLA, ABC News and WTOP reported. The suspect is in custody, WJLA and WTOP reported.
Early information shows the fight involved people who had been inside a nearby business earlier in the night, WJLA reported. WTOP also reported that the fight was outside an "establishment." What started the fight is still under investigation, WJLA reported.
Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public, WJLA and WTOP reported. Carroll did not announce any charges, WJLA reported. The police department's Internal Affairs Division and Criminal Investigations Division are investigating, WJLA reported.
