Driver released without charges after Wichita soccer crash kills boy, man
Police in Wichita, Kansas, released the driver of a truck that hit a youth soccer game Saturday without charges, pending toxicology tests and a vehicle exam. The crash killed Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35, police said. Ten other people were hurt.
Police in Wichita, Kansas, have released without charges the woman who drove a pickup truck onto a field during a youth soccer game on Saturday, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man, Fox News and The Wichita Eagle reported.
The 34-year-old driver was released pending toxicology results and a mechanical examination of her Chevrolet pickup, police said, according to Fox News. Her release followed interviews with more than 30 witnesses and talks with the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office, police said. She has not been named.
The district attorney's office said police were expected to present their first findings to District Attorney Marc Bennett early this week, according to Fox News. Police have not said what caused the crash, and it remains under investigation.
Police named those killed as Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35, both of McPherson, Kansas, Fox News and the Eagle reported. They were not related. "To the families who lost someone: this whole town is grieving with you, and we will stand with you for as long as it takes," McPherson Mayor Jim Loving said on Facebook, according to the Eagle.
Ten other people were hurt, including five children. Police described the injuries as noncritical, according to Fox News.
Police said the truck had been parked near the fields at the Stryker Sports Complex before it drove onto one of them at about 3:25 p.m., according to Fox News. Two of the woman's children were in the truck, and a third was playing on another field, police said.
On Saturday, Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses said the driver had a valid license and was cooperating with investigators, NBC News and Fox News reported. All events at the complex were canceled after the crash, NBC News and KWCH reported.
McPherson schools will have counselors in every building on Monday, Loving said, according to the Eagle.
