The Golden State Valkyries beat the Atlanta Dream 68-64 on Saturday at Chase Center to take Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, ESPN and the San Francisco Chronicle reported. Gabby Williams led all scorers with 26 points, ESPN and the Chronicle reported.

The Valkyries trailed for most of the game, the Chronicle reported, and led for just 6:04 of it, according to ESPN. Golden State closed on a 7-0 run, with Williams scoring six of those points, ESPN reported. The Dream went 0-for-7 in the final 2:53, ESPN reported. Veronica Burton blocked two late Atlanta shots, the Chronicle reported, and Williams went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line down the stretch, according to ESPN.

"We had the game right where we wanted it," Williams said, according to ESPN and the Chronicle. "That's been our bread and butter all season," she said. "That's why we harp on it so much, because we've built great defensive habits for these moments."

Allisha Gray, playing for the first time since hurting her left hand in the semifinals, scored a team-high 19 points for Atlanta, ESPN reported. Angel Reese had 14 points and 12 rebounds, ESPN and the Chronicle reported. Both teams shot under 33% from the field, ESPN and the Chronicle reported.

Valkyries guard Tiffany Hayes did not return after a hard fall, the Chronicle reported. Coach Natalie Nakase said Hayes is OK but gave no clear word on her status for Game 2, according to the Chronicle. "She's a fighter, she wants this," Nakase said, the Chronicle reported. "I want to win this for her."

Dream coach Karl Smesko said his team played too much one-on-one in the second half, ESPN reported. "We were right there. Right there," Smesko said, according to ESPN. "That's why it hurts a little bit, but it also motivates us."

Game 2 is Monday night at Chase Center, the Chronicle reported.

What we know: Golden State leads the Finals 1-0 after a late defensive stand and 26 points from Williams.
What we don't: Whether Hayes will be available for Game 2.
