The Big 12 said early Sunday that Notre Dame should have had time for one more play at the end of its 28-24 loss at BYU on Saturday night, ESPN and CBS Sports reported.

Eighth-ranked BYU beat second-ranked Notre Dame at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah, ESPN and CBS Sports reported. On the last play, Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr threw toward Jaden Greathouse in the end zone, and the pass fell incomplete, ESPN, CBS Sports and On3 reported. Officials ruled the game over, and BYU fans stormed the field, CBS Sports reported.

Replays showed the ball hit the ground with one second left, ESPN reported.

"Following the Big 12's review of the final play of Saturday's Notre Dame-BYU game, it was determined that time remained on the clock when the ball hit the ground and the play was incorrectly cleared by the replay officiating crew," the conference said in a statement, as quoted by ESPN and CBS Sports. "The Conference will conduct a complete review of its end-of-game officiating process in advance of next week's games."

Notre Dame is independent in football, so a Big 12 crew worked the game, ESPN reported.

The last play also raised questions about whether pass interference should have been called on BYU, ESPN, CBS Sports and On3 reported. TV rules analysts said there should have been a second left, On3 reported.

The win kept BYU unbeaten and ended Notre Dame's 16-game winning streak, On3 reported.

It is the second high-profile clock ruling this season, ESPN and CBS Sports reported. In the season opener, Michigan was given back one second and won against Western Michigan on a Hail Mary, ESPN and CBS Sports reported.

What we know: BYU won 28-24, and the Big 12 says one second should have been left for Notre Dame to run another play.
What we don't: What the Big 12's review will change, and how the error will affect how the two teams are judged later this season.
