An Air Force airman died after he fell while rappelling from the ceiling of the Alamodome in San Antonio before the University of Texas at San Antonio played Navy on Saturday night, the Air Force said, KSAT and Task & Purpose reported.

A spokesperson for Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada said the airman was assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, KSAT reported. Task & Purpose reported that the detachment runs selection and first training courses for airmen hoping to become Tactical Air Control Party members, who direct strike aircraft from the ground. His name has not been released.

"The incident is under investigation. More information will be released as it becomes available," the Nellis spokesperson said, according to Task & Purpose.

The airman was one of four service members set to rappel to the field during a pregame ceremony for UTSA's Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans game, KSAT and Task & Purpose reported. A San Antonio Express-News reporter saw him slide in "an uncontrolled manner" about halfway down, Task & Purpose reported. The fall happened just before 7 p.m., the San Antonio Fire Department said, according to KSAT. The fire department said it took a person with a life-threatening injury to a hospital, Task & Purpose reported.

"Everybody was quiet," one witness said, adding that the band stopped performing, KSAT reported.

Kickoff was delayed by 10 minutes, ESPN reported. UTSA coach Jeff Traylor called the accident "heartbreaking" and "tragic" after the game, ESPN reported. UTSA said it was offering support services to students and staff, ESPN and KSAT reported.
