Paramount and Legendary's "Street Fighter" made $4 million from Thursday previews and is on track to open with about $30 million, Deadline and TheWrap reported. Paramount and Legendary's "Street Fighter" took in $4 million from Thursday preview showings, Deadline and TheWrap reported. The video game film led Thursday's box office, TheWrap reported. It was aiming for a domestic opening weekend north of $30 million and a global opening of about $70 million, TheWrap reported Friday morning.
By Friday afternoon, Deadline estimated that the film made $12.5 million on Friday, including previews, at 3,575 theaters, putting it on track for a $30 million opening. That is at "the lower end of expectations," Deadline reported. The film's previews trailed the $5.2 million that "Mortal Kombat 2" made on its Thursday earlier this year, Deadline reported.
"Street Fighter" cost $82 million, a budget split between Legendary and Capcom, the company behind the game, Deadline and TheWrap reported. Critics have been cool on it, but fans are mostly happy, TheWrap reported, citing a 46% critics' score and an 82% early audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
A24's "You Can See Everything," a nearly three-hour documentary about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, made about $1.7 million in previews, TheWrap and Deadline reported. That is a total "unheard of for any documentary," TheWrap reported. Deadline estimated a $5.3 million Friday, including previews, and an opening of about $12 million. That would make it the second-best opening for a documentary in 17 years, not counting concert films, Deadline reported. TheWrap had projected an opening of at least $8 million.
Other new films are off to slower starts. Deadline estimated that the thriller "Whalefall" will open to $6 million to $7 million, below the $11 million that tracking had suggested. The Jane Austen film "Sense & Sensibility" is headed for about $6 million, Deadline reported.
