Soderbergh steps in to help finish filming 'The Batman Part II'
Director Steven Soderbergh will help finish the last weeks of filming on "The Batman Part II" while Matt Reeves deals with a family matter, Variety and TheWrap reported. Reeves said he is not leaving the film. DC Studios chief James Gunn said Reeves is still the director, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Steven Soderbergh is stepping in to help complete "The Batman Part II" while director Matt Reeves attends to a family matter, Variety and TheWrap reported. Variety reported that it had confirmed the news.
"As Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt's work, approached Matt and will step in," the studio said in a statement, according to Variety and TheWrap. The statement said Soderbergh will help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography. "Matt and Steven will work closely together with the actors and crew to fulfill Matt's vision of the film," the statement said. The version published by Variety added that Soderbergh has "the full support of DC Studios."
Reeves said on X that he is staying on. "Just to be clear, I am not leaving The Batman Part II. I am profoundly grateful to Steven for coming to my aid during this challenging time to help me finish principal photography," Reeves wrote, according to Variety and TheWrap. Reeves will keep working on the film but will not be on set while filming wraps up, Variety reported.
DC Studios chief James Gunn also weighed in. "Matt is still the director of The Batman 2 and always will be," Gunn wrote on Threads, the Los Angeles Times reported.
"I thought Matt Reeves' work on 'The Batman' was stunning; it was intentional, specific and rigorously coherent," Soderbergh said in a statement, according to Variety and TheWrap. "The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will integrate seamlessly with what's already been shot so Matt can properly finish his film," he said.
Warner Bros. and DC Studios paused production in early October so Reeves could focus on the family matter, Variety reported. The film stars Robert Pattinson as Batman and is set for release on Feb. 18, 2028, TheWrap and the Times reported. Soderbergh is the Oscar-winning director of "Traffic," "Erin Brockovich" and "Ocean's Eleven," Variety reported.
What we know: Soderbergh will help shoot the final weeks of "The Batman Part II," and Reeves remains the film's director.
What we don't: When filming will wrap and whether the 2028 release date will hold.
Where outlets agree Variety and TheWrap both report that Soderbergh will help finish filming while Reeves attends to a family matter and stays on the film.
Where they differ Variety's version of the studio statement says Soderbergh will step in with the full support of DC Studios, a phrase TheWrap's version does not include.
