Little Rock police charged Kavontae Wilburn, 19, with capital murder after a shooting at a Circle K convenience store on Colonel Glenn Road killed two people Thursday evening, KATV and the Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. KATV reported that the gunfire began around 5:15 p.m.

Police said officers found a 74-year-old man dead inside the store, and a second 19-year-old died at a hospital a short time later, KATV reported. The Democrat-Gazette, citing a police probable cause letter, reported that the second 19-year-old was the suspect's twin brother and was one of at least four people who opened fire. A witness said the dispute was over a broken cellphone, according to the letter, the paper reported.

Four other people were taken to hospitals in critical condition, police said, according to KATV. Police first said three people were in critical condition, and a police spokesman said that count reflected what officers knew at the time, the Democrat-Gazette reported.

Wilburn pleaded not guilty Friday in Little Rock District Court to two counts of capital murder and a charge under the state's Uniform Machine Gun Act, the Democrat-Gazette reported. The police letter says his gun had been modified to fire fully automatically, and that he said in a police interview that he fired at a man he thought was shooting at his brother, the paper reported. Police said charges are pending for one of the wounded men, and a file review will be done on another, KATV reported.

Mayor Frank Scott Jr. said in a video Friday that police were "actively taking folks into custody," the Democrat-Gazette reported. KATV reported that Scott called the shooting "completely senseless." The Democrat-Gazette reported that the same Circle K parking lot was the scene of a deadly shootout in February 2024.
