Ex-fiancé charged with murder in 2011 disappearance of Michelle Parker
Orlando police arrested Michelle Parker's ex-fiancé, Dale Smith Jr., on Wednesday on a charge of second-degree murder in her 2011 disappearance, NBC News and WFTV reported. She vanished hours after the pair appeared on a taped episode of "The People's Court." Smith has pleaded not guilty and is held without bond, and her body has not been found.
Orlando police have arrested Dale Smith Jr., 55, on a charge of second-degree murder in the 2011 disappearance of his ex-fiancée, Michelle Parker, NBC News and WFTV reported. Parker's body has not been found.
Smith was arrested Wednesday, nearly 15 years after Parker disappeared, the outlets reported. Police said "all evidence leads to Dale Smith Jr. as the person responsible for Michelle's murder," NBC News reported. Smith has previously denied involvement in her disappearance, NBC said.
Smith has entered a written plea of not guilty, WFTV reported. His attorney, Rajan Joshi, filed the plea Thursday in Orange County circuit court, and a defense request for a bond hearing was denied, WFTV said. Smith remains held without bond at the Orange County Jail. A court docket entry lists an order sealing the arrest warrant and the affidavit supporting it, the station reported.
Parker, a mother of three, was last seen Nov. 17, 2011, after dropping off her twins with Smith, their father, the outlets reported. That afternoon, Parker and Smith appeared on a prerecorded episode of "The People's Court," in which they settled a dispute over a $5,000 engagement ring, NBC News said. The day after she vanished, her car was found on Orlando's west side, and her cellphone was recovered from a lake south of the city, police said, according to NBC.
Police said the arrest followed a renewed review of the case over the past year, the outlets reported. Detective Phillip McMican said advances in technology helped investigators better interpret years-old evidence from cars, phones and computers, NBC News reported. He said Smith "gave different answers to those same questions" when asked numerous times over the years.
Police said investigators will keep working to find Parker and provide answers to her family, WFTV reported.
"We have been praying since day 1 for answers and closure," Parker's stepmother, Gayle Shabronsky Parker, said, according to NBC News. State Attorney Monique H. Worrell said the charge could be upgraded to first-degree murder if the evidence supports it, NBC reported.
