Illinois man, 19, charged in alleged mass shooting plot at Hindu temple
A 19-year-old Illinois man is charged with making a terrorist threat in an alleged plan for a mass shooting at a Hindu temple, ABC News and CBS News Chicago reported. Police said a tip from someone he messaged led to his arrest Sunday. Prosecutors said he told a coworker his gun jammed.
A 19-year-old man from Palatine, Illinois, has been charged in an alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu place of worship in the Aurora area, ABC News and CBS News Chicago reported.
Alexandros Paporakis was arrested Sunday evening outside his home after Palatine police were contacted by police in nearby Mount Prospect, the outlets reported. Police said someone had reported receiving "concerning electronic communications" from him.
Palatine Police Chief William Nord said Thursday that a red Honda RDX registered to Paporakis entered the parking lot of a "known Hindu temple" in Aurora at 12:25 p.m. Sunday and left about 13 minutes later, ABC News reported. Nord did not name the temple. CBS News Chicago reported that police said the specific intended location has not been confirmed.
In court Wednesday, prosecutors said a coworker at the Taco Bell where Paporakis worked told police he had openly talked about being a white supremacist, CBS News Chicago reported. Prosecutors said that on Sunday afternoon, Paporakis told the coworker his gun jammed and that he got out of there "super-fast." They said he then sent the coworker messages showing an AR-style rifle and a copy of an eight-page manifesto, and that the coworker and another colleague called 911.
Police said they found a rifle, loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of rifle ammunition and a tactical vest with body armor at his home, the outlets reported. A document attributed to him contained white supremacist views, including references to violence against people of Indian descent, police said, according to ABC News.
"I think we were very fortunate that something much much worse didn't happen," Nord said, according to ABC News. He said investigators believe Paporakis planned alone.
Paporakis is charged with one count of making a terrorist threat and one count of unlawful possession of a rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches, both felonies, the outlets reported. A judge ordered him held until trial. His next court date is Oct. 30, ABC News reported. CBS News Chicago said court documents say he had mental and emotional health issues and had been without prescribed medication.
The FBI works with local and state partners "to identify, investigate, and dismantle any threats of violence driven by radical ideologies," said Ryan Whalen, the FBI Chicago special agent in charge, ABC News reported.
